Jerwood Drawing Prize 2016 Winners Announced

The 2016 Jerwood Drawing Prizes were announced at the Jerwood Space last night. Of the four prizes, two were videos.

Speaking at the prize announcement last night Professor Anita Taylor, Jerwood Drawing Prize founding Director and Dean of Bath School of Art & Design said “Drawing is fundamental to our experience as humans”. This might be a good description of the approach of the panel of judges for the Drawing Prize: Glenn Brown, artist; Stephanie Buck, Director, Kupferstich-Kabinett at Staatliche Kunstammlungen Dresden; and Paul Hobson, Director, Modern Art Oxford. They were looking for a contemporary experience of drawing. The specialist panel saw 2,537 works submitted by 1,408 entrants over a two-day period. The selected artworks, and prizes, represent the selectors’ diversity of understandings and varied insights into contemporary drawing. A total of 61 works by 55 artists were selected for exhibition by the panel. Four drawing works were chosen for prizes.

First Prize

The prestigious First Prize of £8,000 has been awarded to Solveig Settemsdal for her video ‘Singularity’, which offers an almost sculptural digital rendering of the transformative and fluid drawing process. Settemsdal, a Norwegian artist based at Spike Island in Bristol, graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2010 and has since been working between sculpture and photography. Settemsdal says of her winning work: “Singularity explores a temporal and sculptural process of drawing in a fluid three-dimensional space through the suspension of ink in cubes of gelatine. In constant transformation, the white mineral ink and the biological gelatine lattice initiate a balance between conscious intention and material process.”

Second Prize

The Second Prize of £5,000 is awarded to Anna Sofie Jespersen for her biro on tracing paper work ‘Sid in Bathtub’. Jespersen, a Danish artist, living and working in London, is currently studying for a Fine Art Degree at Chelsea College of Art. Her prizewinning drawing, which depicts a man lying, fully clothed and smoking, in a bath, is a poetic and tragic work intricate in line and tonality. Jespersen writes of her subject “As I was falling in love with you, you would slowly sink into the parallel dimension where you would become heavy and dense, and slide effortlessly into the void.”

Student Prizes

Two Student Awards of £2,000 each are awarded to Jade Chorkularb and Amelie Barnathan.

Jade Chorkularb, born in Thailand, now lives and works in London. Holding an MSc in Interactive Multimedia, she is a conceptual artist working in diverse media. Her winning work, That What They Would Do, is a beautifully simple and empathetic video of real-time drawing set over interviews asking people what they would do if they only had an hour left to live. A practicing Buddhist, Chorkularb says of the work, “There are various methods (e.g. prayer, meditation, working on our mind) that will enable us to overcome fear, attachment and other emotions that could arise at the time of death and cause our mind to be disturbed, unpeaceful, and even negative. Preparing for death will enable us to die peacefully, with a clear, positive state of mind.”

Amelie Barnathan, studying for her MA in Visual Communication at the RCA, is an Italian-French illustrator living and working in London. Her large-scale, visceral, surreal, and confrontational drawings traverse the historical and mythical through renderings of dreams and nightmares. The intricate and overlaid narratives that unfold within her work “evoke the ecstatic rituals of the Maenads madwoman of Ancient Greece [and the] processions and Sabbaths of the witches of the Middle Ages.”

A Wide Variety of Mediums and Surfaces

There are 61 drawings in the exhibition and the materials were quite varied. There was a predominance of black and white works using graphite, charcoal and ink as expected, but there were also many other media and surfaces. I counted the following media: graphite, ink, felt tip pen, mixed media, burned lines, coloured pencil, pastel pencil, charcoal, biro, crayon, marker pen and correction fluid, string and map pins, watercolour, acrylic ink, collage transfer, stitched thread, pastel, washi tape, print of 3D scan, spray paint, digital collage and digital drawing, charcoal powder, photogram, conte, etching. I counted the following surfaces: cloth, gessoed card, board, book paper, book pages, sketchbook, watercolour paper, cartridge paper, gessoed panel, wood board with pastel primer, black paper, paper mounted on steel, pastel paper, newsprint, tracing paper from a roll, loose canvas, Shiohara paper, polyester draughting film. There were also five videos and a sculptural paper construction. This breadth of materials shows that contemporary artists are unafraid of experimentation to get the results they want.

‘Drawing Talks’ Radio Programme

Shonagh Manson Director of Jerwood Charitable Foundation mentioned that among the projects alongside the Darwing Prize exhibition she enjoyed participating in the ‘Drawing Talks’ 51 drawing responses that will be airing on Resonance FM. Curated by Professor Anita Taylor and produced by Michael Umney, Drawing Talks examines, in twice-daily five-minute programmes, the drawings exhibited in the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2016, by asking viewers to respond to a particular work.

Jerwood Drawing Prize

Jerwood Drawing Prize is the largest and longest running annual open exhibition for drawing in the UK; the project was started in 1994. Supported by Jerwood Charitable Foundation through its programme of awards, exhibitions and events, Jerwood Visual Arts, Jerwood Drawing Prize is a unique initiative led by founding Director, Professor Anita Taylor. The Prize is committed to championing excellence, and to promoting and celebrating the breadth of contemporary drawing practice, this year including hand drawn, digital and three-dimensional works. In offering emerging, mid-career and established artists a national platform to exhibit their work, the exhibition has established a reputation for developing new insights into the role and value of drawing in artistic practice today. Jerwood Visual Arts will host a series of evening events to accompany the exhibition. Events are free but must be booked in advance, for more information please visit www.jerwoodvisualarts.org

Jerwood Drawing Prize has established a reputation for its commitment to championing excellence, and for promoting and celebrating the breadth of contemporary drawing practice within the UK.
“The selected works for Jerwood Drawing Prize 2016 represent a plethora of different idioms and ideas by artists at all stages of their careers, from those at the starting block to the very distinguished. It is remarkable then that, once more, all award winners are connected to current or future education and study. Their works are confident and lively examples of drawing today, fresh in outlook and conception; unafraid to source, mine and examine the historic, spiritual, and visceral imagination through the act of drawing” said Professor Anita Taylor.

The London Group is the UK’s longest running and most prestigious artists’ collective. It was formed in 1913 by thirty-two artists from the Camden Town Group and the English Cubists (later English Vorticists), which included Jacob Epstein, Wyndham Lewis, Walter Sickert and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska. Its aim was to create an independent artist-led exhibiting body in opposition to the Royal Academy. The Group, which has survived without a break, has been an integral force in the growing and supporting of diverse and emerging artistic talent across Britain. The Group’s mentoring and exhibiting programme has gone on to support the careers of many of Britain’s best known artists, who have been members and have been involved in The London Group at some point in their careers. The London Group’s archives to the present date are housed in Tate Britain.

The Cello Factory has been the Group’s exhibiting base for the last seven years and it is always searching and developing new venues to show a wide range of work. The London Group holds a bi-annual Open Exhibition which offers a wonderful opportunity for emerging and established artists to raise their profile and exhibit their work to the public, alongside the Group’s esteemed members, which include Paula Rego and Frank Bowling among many other prestigious artist. In 2018 The London Group will have a members’ Exhibition at the Penwith Gallery, St. Ives, running concurrently with an historic exhibition of past members with Cornish connections at the Belgrave Gallery, St. Ives, as part of the St. Ives Arts Festival.

Susan Haire, president of the London Group says: “The London Group’s mission statement is to advance public awareness of contemporary art and the Group is seriously committed to offering artists the opportunity to showing and nurturing and supporting the development of the art of the future.” Member artist David Redfern wrote in 2013 “At present The London Group has more members than at any point in its history and continues to function without style or dogma, being the only democratically run group which survives into the 21st century. It has recently reintroduced the open submission exhibition and diversified into small group exhibitions for all its members.”

Joan Eardley, Street Kids (detail), about 1949-1951
The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art

Joan Eardley’s career lasted barely fifteen years: she died in 1963, aged just forty-two. During that time she concentrated on two very different themes: the extraordinarily candid paintings of children in the Townhead area of Glasgow; and paintings of the fishing village of Catterline, just south of Aberdeen, with its leaden skies and wild sea. These two contrasting strands are the focus of this exhibition, which looks in detail at her working process. It draws on a remarkable archive of sketches and photographs which remains largely unknown and unpublished.

ING Discerning Eye 2016

The ING Discerning Eye Exhibition is an annual show of small works independently selected by six prominent figures from different areas of the art world: two artists, two art collectors, and two art critics. This year the exhibition is bigger than it’s ever been, showcasing 727 works produced by 405 artists and includes paintings, prints, sculptures, drawings and photographs. Sponsored by ING Commercial Banking, the exhibition will run from 17 – 27 November 2016 at the Mall Galleries in London.

The selectors have adopted uniquely personal approaches for curating their sections of the exhibition. They have each curated their own section of the exhibition, drawing their selection from artists they have personally invited to exhibit, as well as artworks submitted through an open call. The result is six smaller exhibitions within one, each with a very distinct personality. The uniqueness of having each work chosen by an eminent individual, unlike in a group selected show, has earned the exhibition an excellent reputation among art lovers and collectors alike. The charm of the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition lies in the unpredictability and variety of the selectors’ choices. Works of lesser-known artists hang alongside those of more established artists helping to connect hundreds of new artists with new audiences.

This year’s selection panel included artist and writer Dan Coombs, currently visiting professor at Haute École d’art et de design in Geneva, alongside artist and Royal Academician Chris Orr RA. They were joined by two collectors: well-known television, film and theatre actress Celia Imrie, and Ian Mayes QC, Master of the House at Middle Temple and Chairman of the Temple Church. The final two selectors were the poet and art critic Michael Glover whose criticism is frequently seen in The Independent and The Times, and Sacha Craddock, art critic, writer and curator who co-founded Artschool Palestine.

Shifting States

29 November – 11 December 2016

The condition of liminality is a state of transition, of suspension on the threshold between one place, time or state of mind and another. It involves ambiguity, uncertainty and the dissolution of order: identities and outcomes are thrown into doubt. It speaks of borderlands, faultlines and indeterminate places.

The exhibition features painting, print, photography, film, installation and sculpture by Richard Brayshaw, Deborah Burnstone, Janet Curley Cannon, Robert Fitzmaurice, Nick Hazzard, Maria-Lena Hedberg, Stephanie Herbert, Alison Lumb, Maureen Nathan, Rosey Prince, Ann Simberg, Sally Tyrie, Jim Vernon, Erika Wengenroth, Edward Winters. Ways of Seeing

Chloe Regan

Chloe Regan

The Museum worked with illustrator Chloe Regan, who graduated from the Royal College of Art with a MA degree, to explore different ways of seeing an object. Looking from different angles and observing details, standing from a distance as well as sitting close to the cabinets, Chloe Regan has created a series of drawings showing how she engages with unfamiliar works of art by focusing on their shape, the effect of light and shade as well as surface decoration and texture.

Since our staff are all artists, they are a good source of information for what would make a good gift for a creative person. Each year I ask a few of them what they fancy in the current Jackson’s catalogue, one big thing and one small thing. Fascinated by Colour: the ‘Seeing Red’ Exhibition

$

The colour red grabs your attention; it fascinates and captivates.
The ‘Seeing Red’ group exhibition, showing for two weeks at Espacio Gallery (31 January – 13 February 2017), will fill the two floors of the large beautiful space with glowing colour. Whether scarlet, crimson, maroon, vermilion, berry, ruby, rose, burgundy, carmine, brick, or cerise – red is both satisfying and exciting. The strong feelings suggested by the colour red – passionate love, blood and anger – are always stimulating!

Artists have a close understanding of colour and use it to great advantage – as Matisse famously said: “A thimble full of red is redder than a bucketful.” The 18 colourist artists in the exhibition celebrate the many ways to see the colour red. Red can boost your energy, it exudes confidence and is life-affirming, so this show is a great place to visit in the middle of a dreary London winter.

With a focus on painting, the artwork in this show also includes printmaking, collage, drawing and photography. The subjects of interest to the artists in this show include: extinction of species, histories of Asia, human impact on the landscape, the natural world, landscape painting, the colour of flowers, the urban environment, the current political situation, food, nighttime seascapes, portraits, and pure abstraction. The artists exhibiting in ‘Seeing Red’ are: John Adams, Terry Beard, Tania Beaumont, Liz Brown, Paul Butler, Christine Calow, Laurence Cammas, Julie Caves, Bozena Czyz, Kanwal Dhaliwal, Zelda Eady, Laura Gompertz, Raina Goran, Sally Grumbridge, Philip Leevers, Laura New, Tina Viljoen, and Cary Whitworth.

Organiser Sally Grumbridge, who has organised exhibitions themed around colour before, says: “I hope the exhibition will show how colour can inspire artists and help them communicate. The Espacio Gallery walls will be alive with vibrant, exciting work in all hues of red. The show should appeal to people who love colour, people who are interested in the meaning of colour and people who wish to be cheered up on a grey February afternoon!”

The Artists

John Adams, who studied art in Glasgow and London, is showing a series of prints (etching and screenprinting) representing the experience of an urban walk, from Euston to Holborn, through a number of London squares.

Christine Calow studied at Cambridge School of Art where she received the annual Printmaking Travel Award and Loughborough College of Art and Design where she received a degree in Printed Textiles. Using screenprints and paper collage, her work is inspired by her travels to India, in particular the vibrant desert state of Rajasthan, where red is considered a very auspicious colour.

Laurence Cammas has been painting and making jewellery for 15 years in Asia and the Far East, and has recently moved to London. She makes large oil paintings with figurative themes in which the colour red is very important for its energy and vibrancy, as well as its Eastern symbolism of good fortune.

Her large Colour Field paintings, a variety of abstract paintings, and domestic-sized nighttime seascapes are a result of her interest in surface, colour, ambiguity and oppositions.

Kanwal Dhaliwal has been a practicing painter and sculptor for over 30 years since he graduated in Fine Arts, and he has exhibited in India, France and UK. His figure paintings use red to signify revolution, labour movements and bloody conflicts in his work about the history of India.

Laura Gompertz studied Theatre Design at Nottingham Trent University and runs her own interior design practice. Her bold, colourful oil paintings of food, especially fruit and vegetables, are inspired by the abstract shapes and colour in natural objects and commonplace things such as figs, pomegranates, rocks or ice.

Located not too far from Whitechapel Gallery, Espacio is always part of their First Thursday late-night art events.

Jean Rose

Jean Rose was among the first artists to enrol at the Bath Academy of Art in the late 1940s. Sixty-five years later she is still at work in the city, producing tellingly observed paintings of shoppers, street vendors, dog-walkers and garden centre visitors. These works celebrate everyday social activities, whilst paying homage to the methods of earlier painters such as Edouard Vuillard and Piero della Francesca. Jean Rose has exhibited widely, and all works will be for sale in this, her first one-woman show in Bath since 2008.
