Lost & Found

2-14 May 2017

lost and found exhibition espacio

Ten artists have explored the ideas of ‘Lost’ and ‘Found’ over the last year through painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and interactive installations. The artists are: Graham Asker, Julie Caves, Esperanza Gomez-Carrera, Nick Hazzard, Martin Howard, Ruth Kathryn Jones, Peter Lang, Chris Mercier, Matt Smith, and Liz Whiteman Smith. Most of the artists have shown together before in the highly acclaimed exhibitions ‘Artists in Wonderland’ and ‘Quantum: A Journey Through the Standard Model”, both at Espacio Gallery. Though structured around a universal concept, each of the artists has approached the idea from a very different perspective and this broad range of responses has resulted in a thought-provoking, engaging exhibition.

Graham Asker, Julie Caves, Esperanza Gómez-Carrera, Nick Hazzard, Martin Howard, Ruth Jones, Peter Lang, Chris Mercier, Matt Smith, Liz Whiteman Smith. Curated by Liz Whiteman Smith. Private View: Thursday 4 May 6-9pm. Part of Whitechapel Gallery’s First Thursdays.

Spencer is influenced by the representation of women in historical settings, their stories, loves and loses. The exhibition includes 1000 small portraits of imaginary women, which are presented alongside the artist’s response to portraits of women found at the National Trust’s Killerton House, on the outskirts of Exeter. The title, Strange And Romantic, refers to Anne Acland’s description of the life of Lady ‘Harriot’ Christian Henrietta Caroline Fox-Strangways.

This exhibition considers the notion of the ‘graphic witness’, a term that harnesses the power of drawing to challenge and question the status quo, to record and reflect protest, as well as to bear witness to social injustices and the horrors of war. Graphic Witness explores the way drawings can both document injustices and become agents that encourage us to act. Two Women Sitting In
a Garden

English Artist Designers 1922 – 1942. The exhibition will include many of the artist and designer Eric Ravilious’s (1903-1942) key works shown alongside both well-known and less seen works by his contemporaries, including work by each artist that has never before been exhibited publicly, and will focus chronologically on key moments when the work and careers of these artists coincided, overlapped or was particularly pertinent to the others, such as their time at the Royal College of Art, the 1927 St George’s exhibition, their time spent at Furlongs and Newhaven in Sussex, and their various roles in the Second World War. The exhibition represent the wide range of media in which the artists worked, from watercolours to woodcuts, lithographic prints, book jackets and illustrations, patterned papers, and wallpaper and fabric design.

The Peasants Are Revolting! Sigrid Holmwood

The work in this exhibition comes out of Sigrid Holmwood’s research into the construction of a pigment garden in the South of Spain at Joya: arte + Ecología. Holmwood uses the figure of the peasant – in her paintings but also through an adopted persona – as a means to highlight the links between the exclusion of European peasant culture and the suppression of indigenous pigment making technologies and practices through Western modernity and colonialism. A collection of drawings by Ida Applebroog executed during a period of intense introspection in 1969 and 1970. Discovered by Applebroog’s studio assistant in 2009, these deeply personal works on paper are now considered to anticipate the artist’s painting and drawing practice – disconcerting scenarios that address the politics of power and sexuality – that brought her notoriety in New York in the 1970s.

Full STEAM Ahead: The E17 Art Trail 2017

The theme for the E17 Art Trail this year is STEAM, the acronym that recognises the place of Art alongside the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
3-18 June 2017

The E17 Art Trail has become a Walthamstow phenomenon, the largest community-led arts festival in London.

The festival happens over 16 days in East London, from 3-18 June, plus 37 exhibitions open on 1 June for a preview night and parties. This year sees over 7,000 local artists and residents participating across Walthamstow, many responding to this year’s theme, STEAM, celebrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. Impressively, one in every 15 people in Walthamstow is exhibiting or performing as part of this year’s E17 Art Trail, and that’s not even including all the host venues, businesses and additional volunteers that get involved to make it happen!

Walthamstow’s every-two-years community-led arts festival takes place in open houses, studios, galleries, streets, parks, workplaces, places of worship, schools and local businesses, sharing the creative endeavours of local artists and residents in over 250 events and exhibitions. There is even an exhibition of art displayed on a hedge. On just one day of the festival there are talks from artists and scientists, a film festival, performance, singing, dance, drumming, workshops, walks, cycling tours, puppets and 130 exhibitions!

E17 Art Trail map Blackhorse Lane Studios BAGT

The E17 Art Trail website is brilliant, very easy to navigate! You can browse the offerings by date and location on the map as well as in a virtual booklet that you can flip through page by page. The printed guides are available all over Walthamstow including at the library and The Mill community centre. The cover artist on the guide is Helen Mauer, whose studio it at the Barbican Arts Group Trust space: Blackhorse Lane Studios.

The Trail is divided up into smaller trails within Walthamstow, so you can see a wide variety of work within easy walking distance of each other: Blackhorse and Higham Hill Trail; William Morris Trail; High Street Trail; Markhouse and Lee Bridge Trail; Hoe Street Trail; Village Trail; and the Wood Street and Chapel End Trail. If you wish to see the trail in a group you can join a tour – there are both walking and cycling tours that you can join, see the details in the guide. You can follow the E17 Art Trail on socail media for updates: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.

Be Magnificent: Walthamstow School of Art 1957-1967

9 June – 10 September 2017

Sir Peter Blake Self Portrait with Badges

Walthamstow School of Art cultivated some of the most influential creative talent of the 1950s and 60s. Leading names in art, fashion, music and film studied and taught here – including Pop Artists Peter Blake and Derek Boshier, musician Ian Dury, filmmakers Ken Russell and Peter Greenaway and fashion designers Celia Birtwell, Marion Foale and Sally Tuffin. The exhibition will explore this radical era at the School; showing the early work of these seminal artists and designers and revealing how they were encouraged to explore their creative imagination- taking art and culture in radical new directions.

This incredible era at the School has never been explored or researched in depth, despite the fact that all the leading players cite their time in Walthamstow as key to their later development. For the first time, the early work of these influential artists and designers will be brought together in one exhibition, to show how it was in the art schools of post-war Britain, rather than the universities, that the benefits of a free, universal secondary education were most evident. The exhibition will capture the energy, excitement and dynamism of these young artists, teachers and designers as they first started out in their careers. The exhibition will reveal personal testimony and original work created by the pupils and teachers during their time at the School, as well as personal photographs and archival material, film, music and ephemera from the period.

31 Women

2 June – 31 July 2017

31 Women channels the pioneering spirit of the exhibition at Peggy Guggenheim’s New York gallery in 1943. Featuring artists within Guggenheim’s circle, 31 Women will combine work by successive generations of practitioners from the 1940s to the present day.

Taking cues from the transitional moment when Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism co-existed in 1940s New York, two thematic threads will be traced. The first privileging artistic positions embracing the psychological, instinctual and erotic, or which depend on notions of chance, the uncanny and accidental. The second establishing a continuity of formalist inquiry incorporating multiple modes of abstract mark making and production.

Participating artists include Eileen Agar, Laura Aldridge, Cornelia Baltes, Claire Barclay, Rana Begum, Eva Berendes, Helen Chadwick, Angela de la Cruz, Tracey Emin, Lydia Gifford, Celia Hempton, Allison Katz, Lauren Keeley, Ella Kruglyanskaya, Mary Martin, Cornelia Parker, Aimée Parrott, Mary Ramsden, Bridget Riley, Eva Rothschild, Katie Schwab, Jo Spence, Tyra Tingleff, Patricia Treib, Alison Turnbull, Phoebe Unwin, Gillian Wearing, Rachel Whiteread, Clare Woods, Rose Wylie and Catherine Yarrow.

Maximum Overdrive

20 May – 10 September 2017

‘Maximum Overdrive’ shares its title with the first and only film written and directed by the acclaimed sci-fi and horror novelist, Stephen King. Released thirty years ago, the film depicts a freak cosmic occurrence in which machines awaken and turn against their human-makers. The project seeks to connect the gallery space to its immediate social context at Elmer Square. Artists, practitioners and community groups are invited to activate set perimeters designed by the gallery, mirroring the role of the square as a challenge to how the gallery space can support and network a wider sphere of social or cultural activity with different modes of technology. Julia Crabtree and William Evans, Thomas Lock, Nina Wakeford, Lucy Woodhouse.

What I See When I Look At

26 June – 1 July 2017

current events

current events

What I See When I Look At is a project started by graphic designer Robert John aimed at re-engaging viewers with the things seen everyday. This project asks us to go back to the imagination of our child-selves and engage with the world around us. The more personal meaning of the project is about our concepts of reality. Robert’s father lived with Parkinson’s for many years before his father passed away. During which, he developed Parkinson’s dementia, he began seeing things which were not visible to us, yet they were so real to him, he could see these things, smell them, even touch and feel them. This made Robert think about what our concepts of reality are and what we choose to actually see. How real are they? To produce colours of reliable consistency and a high standard of colour matching demands a combination of the traditional crafts of the artist colourmen and modern colour technology skills. The colours in this range each contain the maximum pigment content with good handling qualities and achieve the highest possible tinting strength when reduced with white.

The buttery consistency of Artists’ Oil Colour, together with the smell of linseed oil, are the two characteristics most admired by oil painters. The colour qualities and blendability of oil paint can’t be beaten by other media. The consistency of the body of Winsor & Newton colours can retain brush or palette knife marks or it can be thinned to the very finest of glazes.

Winsor & Newton Artists' Oil Colour

Winsor and Newton Artists’ Oil Colour hand-painted colour chart

Winsor & Newton Artists' Oil Colour

Selecting your paints based on a printed colour chart or colours on a web page will give you an approximation of the colour, but as well as not being completely accurate, they are not paint so the shine, opacity, colour strength and other qualities will not be visible. The most accurate (and enjoyable) way of choosing your colours is using a hand-painted colour chart.. The actual oils you are buying are painted onto card and labelled with the name, colour number, opacity and lightfastness rating. The colour is drawn down from a thick layer to show the mass tone to a thin layer to show the undertone. By combining this with all the technical information supplied on the printed colour chart like opacity, pigment names and numbers, permanence and more you can better understand the colours you are choosing and using.

In Paper We Trust

26 July – 30 September 2017

Emma Apicelli
Crush em’
2016, Ink and Coloured pencil on paper, 28.6 x 36.2 cm

The Dot Project’s last show explored the use of digital technology as a medium for contemporary artists. Now the gallery is reflecting on a more traditional material – paper. Before industrialism made the mass production of paper a throw away commodity, it was a luxury few could afford. Once again it is becoming a rarity with the dominance of the digital screen. This exhibition examines the initial working process of the emerging, mid-career, and established artists, exposing the underdrawing in the finished work.
Artists: Emma Apicelli, Ellen Berkenblit, Judith Bernstein, Armin Boehm, Joe Bradley, Matthew F Fisher, Philip Hinge, Aaron Elvis Jupin, Koak, Tomasz Kowalski, Joel Kyack, José Lerma, Sharon Madanes, JJ Manford, Bruna Massadas, Robert Nicol, Nick Payne, Brad Phillips, Felix Francisco Quintana, Peter Saul, Peter Schenck, Ryan Schneider, Bailey Scieszka, Michael Swaney, Austyn Weiner, Rose Wylie.

Window Sill

27 July – 25 August 2017

Window Sill takes its starting point from the aesthetic encountered in ‘seaside homes’ where often windows become impromptu displays for kitsch ornaments, nostalgic memorabilia and domestic paraphernalia. In this latest exhibition at Perimeter Space, its long window becomes lined with sculptures, window stickers and glass hangings which blur the meaning of sculptural objects when (re)positioned in this way. Perimeter Space is supported by Griffin Gallery providing experimental dialogues and collaborations in this new project space. Sarah Baker, Sasha Bowles, Adam Dix, Magda Drwiega, Richard Ducker, Matt Gee, Ludovica Gioscia, Jane Harris, Samuel Herbert, Sharon Kivland, Hiroe Komai, Liane Lang, Karen Murat, Zoë Mendelson, Darren O’Brien, Harry Roberts, Dallas Seitz, Sophia Starling, Holly Stevenson, Karen Tang, Julie Verhoeven, Alice Wilson, David Ben White, Neil Zakiewicz.
