We are pleased to announce that Elizabeth McCarten is the winner of the Jackson’s Young Artist Award in the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition.

Elizabeth McCarten’s 76x56cm watercolour painting ‘The Boboli Gardens’ was selected by the judges from over 1,000 entries. The 2017 judging panel comprised Sarah Long, Director of Long and Ryle Gallery; Kathryn Maple, artist and 2016 First Prize Winner; Louis Wise, critic and writer for The Sunday Times and Andrew Wilton, Visiting Research Fellow at Tate Britain.

Royal Drawing School graduate Elizabeth McCarten says that “living in a complex and urban environment, my work often stems from a desire to find freedom, space and simplicity. Finding and connecting to places by creating emotive responses are central to my painting process.” The artist recently completed a residency at Borgo Pignano in Italy where she was able to travel to Florence and make a series of works, including her prizewinning watercolour painting.

Now in its 30th year, The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition is the largest and most prestigious showcase of contemporary watercolour painting in the UK. The competition aims to celebrate and reward excellence and originality in the medium of watercolour. Whether the work is abstract or figurative, contemporary or traditional, the competition aims to celebrate and redefine the beauty and diversity of watercolour and water-based media. It offers a First Prize of £10,000, the Jackson’s Young Artist Award of £500 worth of vouchers towards artist materials, and the St Cuthberts Mill Prize for an outstanding work on paper (worth £250).

The First Prize of £10,000, has this year been awarded to Richard Fowler, for Portishead, a vibrant painting which is part of a wider series of work exploring the effects of natural forces on man-made structures. The artist has utilised cut paper ‘masks’ with stencil brushes of various sizes to achieve the sharp edges and textures of corroding steel and decaying wood. Speaking of the work, Fowler says “…the sunlight falling on the rusting steel, contrasting with the intense blue of the sky gives the image a somewhat surreal and sinister quality whilst the stark outlines and rugged shapes are reminiscent of an ancient castle or coastal fortification.”

Richard Fowler, Portishead, acrylic on canvas board, 68x53cm

The St Cuthberts Mill prize for an outstanding work on paper, worth £250, was awarded to Annie Williams for her watercolour, Still Life with a Small Spanish Bowl. Abstraction meets representation in this dynamic work which is occupied by beautiful prussian blue, cerulean and ultramarine tones. Speaking of the subject matter, the artist said “most of my chosen objects are pots – I have a sister and friends who are potters, so have acquired quite a number over the years. I love their shapes and colours.”

The Republic of Brexitopia

6-16 September 2017

current events

The Republic of Brexitopia is an imaginary country of the near future. An exhibition at the Espacio Gallery has invited an international group of artists to explore the forms that such a country might take and the forces that might shape it. Using a mix of participative, performative and provocative strategies the 27 participating artists address not just Brexitopia’s political and economic trajectory, but also the relationship between its citizens, the lure of exceptionalism, and the narrow line between optimism and delusion, utopia and dystopia.

The tone of the artworks varies from the passionate to cool observation, from the committed to wry humour. Some responses are based on personal experience of the artists – a shaken sense of belonging and the feeling of being turned into “the other”. Other responses test the boundaries of patriotism, truth and historical remembrance. The participative nature of many of the works invites the visitor to reflect on the idea of human agency. They suggest that we don’t have to resign ourselves to the inevitability of this or that future, but that we can choose to be active agents in shaping the future we desire.

Roan Allen, Roelof Bakker, Jenni Bea, Ben Bird, Lizzie Brown, Andy Caruso, Emer Costello, James Din, David Dunnico, Ahmed Farooqui, Jake Francis, Livia Garcia, Esperanza Gomez Carrera, Jacqui Grant, Tom Hackett, Christina Lovey, Liana Bortolozzo, Andy Metcalf, Bong Crisby, Samira Oulaillah, Billie Penfold, Marta Pieregonczuk, Sophia Platts-Palmer, Laurence Leng Rassat, Marc Renshaw, Louise Scillitoe-Brown, Chia-An Yang. Gary Lawrence Makes History Winning Jerwood Drawing Prize For A Second Time

$

The annual Jerwood Drawing Prize has established a reputation for its commitment to championing excellence, and for promoting and celebrating the breadth of contemporary drawing practice within the UK. On 12th September 2017 the prestigious First Prize of £8,000 was awarded to Gary Lawrence for his monumental drawing Yellow Kalymnos and Fridge Magnets.

The largest and longest-running annual open exhibition for drawing in the UK, the Jerwood Drawing Prize is presented in collaboration with Bath Spa University. The first prize and other prizewinners were chosen from the 69 works by 65 artists which have been selected for the 2017 exhibition by Dr David Dibosa, writer, researcher and Reader in Museology at the University of the Arts London, Helen Legg, Director of Spike Island and Michael Simpson, artist.

First Prize – Gary Lawrence

Gary Lawrence, Yellow Kalymnos with Fridge Magnets, 2017
Felt pen and poster paint on canvas, 250x249cm. Photograph: Colin Mills.

This is first time an artist has won the Jerwood Drawing Prize twice in the history of the award. Gary Lawrence’s intricate depiction of Greek Island Kalymnos, which has been produced in felt pen and poster paint, is a celebration of draughtsmanship and observational skill. The complex composition provides a snapshot of popular tourist spot Kalymnos Square, honing in on the myriad of magnets for sale at the side of the road, each accompanied by an ironic comment from the artist – ‘Athens – never been here’, ‘Cyprus ‘08 ok-ish’, ‘Zante Town – Euro Spar’. Taking almost a year to complete, the drawing is a labyrinth of personal narratives, executed with technical precision using readily available craft materials. Gary Lawrence also won in 2011 with his drawing Homage to Anonymous

Professor Anita Taylor, founding Director of the Jerwood Drawing Prize recalled the moment the drawing was unfurled for the selection panel to view: “it was immediately striking, with its intense colour and construction – it was compelling.” Artist and selector Michael Simpson said Gary Lawrence’s drawing was “a brilliant evocation of a time capsule; of time squashed in on itself as a topographical romance in retrospect.” Dr David Dibosa, also on the 2017 panel, felt the piece “radiated power”.

Second Prize – Ana Mendes

Ana Mendes
On Drawing, 2016
Video, 9m 53s [still shown].

Ana Mendes is the recipient of the £5,000 second prize for her video work On Drawing – an emotive interview with Mina Pegourie, a housemaid the artist met during a residency in France. Moroccan born Pegourie discusses how she’s used drawing to navigate her way through life, given that she cannot read or write. She says “when someone gives me their phone number, I draw something to remind me.” The film encourages viewers to consider the relationship between thinking and drawing and the utilisation of drawing as a tool for everyday life.

Two Student Awards – Jade Montserrat and Dejan Mrdja

The two Student Awards, each worth £2,000, were awarded to Jade Montserrat, for documentary photograph No Clothes Needed, and Dejan Mrdja, for his dynamic video work Chasing Synchrony 2.0.

Jade Montserrat
No Need For Clothing, 2017.

Jade Montserrat’s practice lies in the intersection between art and activism, manifested through performance, film, installation, sculpture, print and text. The artist interrogates these mediums with the aim of exposing gaps in our visual and linguistic habits. Her prizewinning piece speaks of entanglement and commodity fetishism; a polemic engaged in combat between histories of colonialism and today’s realities.

Dejan Mrdja
Chasing Synchrony 2.0, 2017.
Charcoal, chalk, brush, ice-pick on board,
video, 4m [still shown].

In Dejan Mrdja’s Chasing Synchrony 2.0, the artist creates a link between drawing, installation and performance. Rather than focusing on an end product or outcome, Mrdja celebrates the process of drawing – it becomes a shared activity, uniting both performers and viewers through an immersive experience.
Evelyn Williams Drawing Award – Barbara Walker

Barbara Walker, Exotic Detail in the Margin #2, 2017

Barbara Walker is the recipient of the newly-introduced Evelyn Williams Drawing Award, worth £10,000. Barbara Walker’s figurative drawings explore race identity, belonging, class and power. The new award, which is worth £10,000, will support the artist to realise a body of new drawings, culminating in a solo exhibition at Jerwood Gallery, Hastings in 2018. Eligible artists selected for the 2017 exhibition were invited to apply for the Award. The final selection was made by Elizabeth Gilmore, Director, Jerwood Gallery, Hastings; Anita Taylor, founding Director, Jerwood Drawing Prize, and Nicholas Usherwood, Art Critic and Curator and trustee of the Evelyn Williams Trust.

Exhibiting Artists

The Jerwood Drawing Prize is the largest and longest running annual open exhibition for drawing in the UK. Supported by Jerwood Charitable Foundation through its programme of awards, exhibitions and events, Jerwood Visual Arts, Jerwood Drawing Prize is a unique initiative led by founding Director, Professor Anita Taylor (Executive Dean of Bath School of Art & Design at Bath Spa University). The Prize is committed to championing excellence, and to promoting and celebrating the breadth of contemporary drawing practice, this year including hand drawn, digital and three-dimensional works. In offering emerging, mid-career and established artists a national platform to exhibit their work, the exhibition has established a reputation for developing new insights into the role and value of drawing in creative practice today.

The Jerwood Drawing Prize exhibition will be on display at Jerwood Space, London from 13 September – 22 October 2017, followed by a national tour to East Gallery, Norwich University of the Arts (14 November 2017 – 6 January 2018), The Edge, University of Bath (10 February – 31 March 2018), Sidney Cooper Gallery, Canterbury (11 April – 6 May 2018), Vane Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne (26 May – 28 July 2018) and Drawing Projects UK (17 August – 6 October 2018).

The Selectors

Dr David Dibosa trained as a curator after receiving his first degree from Girton College, University of Cambridge. He was awarded his PhD in Art History from Goldsmiths College, University of London. During the 1990s, he curated public art projects. He is currently Course Leader for MA Curating and Collections at Chelsea College of Arts. He is also a Researcher in University of the Arts London’s Research Centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nation (TrAIN).

Helen Legg was previously Curator at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, where she worked for 5 years on exhibitions and offsite projects as well as the development of Ikon Eastside, a second gallery based in a former factory building in Digbeth. In 2010, she was appointed Director of Spike Island, an international centre for the development of contemporary art and design, based in Bristol. She sat on the selection panel for the Paul Hamlyn Artist’s Awards in 2013 and latterly for the Turner Prize and the CAS Annual Award in 2014. She is Chair of Visual Arts South West and an advisor for the Bristol Cultural Development Partnership.

Michael Simpson studied at Bournemouth College of Art (1958-60) and Royal College of Art, London (1960-63). He now lives and works in Wiltshire, UK, making large scale paintings in ongoing series that repeat and rework a number of key elements. Rooted in a fascination with fifteenth century Venetian and early Flemish painting, and inflected by the formal restraint and reduced palette of Minimalism, Simpson has developed a distinctive, darkly comedic artistic vocabulary with which to create works that move beyond their subject matter to question the nature of painting itself. His forthcoming solo exhibition will open at Blain Southern, Berlin in September 2017.

3-15 October 2017

current events

EO6 asks serious questions about artists contemporary practice and their place within art history’s foundations by dealing in the tropes of Photography, Abstract and Urban Expressionism, Surrealism, Modernist regard for material, with a Postmodern ease in mixing references. The artists work to establish a distance between themselves and their work to create the void which allows them to reflect on and then push at the boundaries, the edges of their practices. Sculpture, installation, painting, printmaking and photography.

‘A Stately Dance’, 1945

19×33 cm
John Armstrong ARA

John Armstrong was a Sussex-born painter, muralist and designer, notably a member of Paul Nash’s Unit One group, a collection of artists that embraced the twin poles of abstraction and Surrealism. This exhibition on the Cornish coast is the first major survey of his work since a 1975 show at the Royal Academy, two years after his death. Armstrong had been made an Associate member of the Royal Academy in 1966, a form of pre-selection for full Academy membership once a vacancy arose. Although Armstrong sadly did not live to become an RA, he produced a stunning body of work that took inspiration from both the English landscape and the major conflicts that took place during his lifetime, such as the two World Wars and the Spanish Civil War.

Brice Marden installation view at Gagosian Grosvenor Hill, London
Artworks © Brice Marden/ARS, NY and DACS, London 2017.

New paintings by Brice Mardens, his first exhibition in London since the Serpentine Gallery in 2000. He has extended and refined the traditions of lyrical abstraction, from the subtle, shimmering monochromes of his earlier career to the calligraphic compositions that characterize the last three decades. Recently, Marden has turned his attention to the qualities of monochrome again, turning his gaze to the expansive possibilities of terre verte (green earth), an iron silicate/clay pigment. Terre verte came into use during the Renaissance, its greenish hue and innate transparency serving as a base to balance flesh tones; Marden first used it in connection with the Grove Group paintings of the 1970s (exhibited at Gagosian New York in 1991).

Marcelle Hanselaar
The Crying Game 2, 2017
etching/aquatint
25x30cm
edition of 30

An exhibition of Marcelle Hanselaar’s complete portfolio of etchings: The Crying Game and to celebrate the presentation of a fully illustrated book about this powerful set of prints.
The book will be launched at the gallery and signed copies will be available to purchase during the exhibition and afterwards from Julian Page. The Crying Game prints are in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.

Marcelle Hanselaar is a London-based Dutch painter and printmaker. Her latest set of etchings inspired by Otto Dix’s Der Krieg War prints series are a passionate response to present day violence. “When I see and hear the ongoing reports of wars, of the harsh things we do to each other, I feel I have to do something in order not to be complicit. Being an artist, all I can do is draw and in doing so to draw attention to what matters.” Private View and Book Launch: Monday 30 October 7-9pm.

Landscape: Paintings by Emma Turpin and Duncan Pickstock

2 – 26 November 2017

Autumn Light by Emma Turpin, 27×24 cm, mixed media on paper, 2016.

Turpin and Pickstock use the natural world as a starting point to inform their paintings, without solely producing illustrative or representational work. Both their work references the light, colour and forms that are present in landscapes.

Turpin uses familiar forms to attempt to find a harmonious resolution which balances colour and form. Pickstock’s paintings seem to be landscapes while remaining abstract; bands of colour remind the viewer of the time of day or the distinction between the horizon and the skyline.

Every Me

9 – 12 November
Private View: Thursday 9th November between 6pm-9pm

Highest Heights by Lena Heubusch. October 2017

Every Me/ BenTanıdık Bir Yabancı was an art residency in Adana, Turkey that ran between 21st September to 8th October. Curated by Mustafa Boga, it was a collaboration between local life and visiting artists and examined how experiences that come from culture, education, lifestyles and religion can be explored and interpreted through visual and expressive language.

The residency focused on ‘Self Portrait’ and how participants adapted to a new culture and whether this calls into question one’s sense of identity. It poses understanding new culture as a journey based in the personal and explores assumptions and perceptions that are thrown into question by observing others.

This exhibition is a response to the artists’ experience in Turkey.

Craig Jefferson: A Step Back

2 November – 25 November 2017

Masts 1 by Craig Jefferson

A month long, solo show of Craig Jefferson’s paintings at the Georgian Gallery in the Ards Art Centre.

This exhibition explores how Jefferson’s work, which focuses on the profound qualities of his surroundings, has developed since his move to Northern Ireland from Edinburgh. It compares his new and old works: drawings and paintings that explore still life, figure and landscape subjects as well as ambiguous forms which straddle both realism and abstraction.

Andrew Bracey: ReconFigure Paintings

10 – 25 November 2017

Andrew Bracey’s exhibition consists of reproductions of oil paintings, each varying in style, period and type of figuration that have then been worked over with geometric/ crystalline paintwork. The aim is to disrupt the viewer’s eye and change their view of the original piece that has been reproduced while still creating a work that is unique in itself. There will be a combination of small scale paintings by Bracey and large digital prints from the series at the size of the original painting Bracey has based his works on.

Third Ghost by Mali Morris

The EY Exhibition Impressionists in London

2 November – 7 May

Camille Pissarro, Hampton Court Green 1891, National Gallery of Art, Washington. Ailsa Mellon Bruce Collection.

This exhibition presents works by Monet, Tissot, Pissarro, Dalou, Sisley, Derain and Legros.

In the 1870s, the Franco-Prussian war and insurrection in Paris drove artists to flee France and seek safety in England. Their experience of London, friendships formed there and their involvement with the British art scene, not only developed the scene itself but dramatically changed their own work.

It is also an opportunity to see the largest selection of Monet’s Houses of Parliament paintings to have been shown in Europe for the last 40 years.

Finding the Best Easel

$

How can you find the artist easel that will work best for you? When looking for an easel that best suits the needs of your individual practice, consider how and where you will be using it – you may need a sturdy easel because you push hard against the canvas as you paint, or an easel that will tilt to horizontal for watercolour painting, or a small easel for your cosy shed painting space.
Because it can be difficult to tell what features will work and not work for you just by looking at it, we asked artists to tell us which easel they use, why they chose it and what about their easel makes it the right one for them. This collection of feedback gives an insight into a range of easels – from why you might want a Tavy easel, whose bottom picture rest can be raised independently to prevent damage to low ceilings, to why a drafting table might solve the issue of wanting to have an easel which you can use at 45 degrees, 90 degrees or even flat. It clarifies some of the particular benefits of different easels as well as helping you decide which one would really suit you.

“I own three Frank Herring easels. The best being The Herring Versatile easel. Light, extremely versatile for both oil or watercolour, very stable and strong. A joy to work on and one that I recommend when demonstrating or running workshops. It’s simply the best.” – Rob Dudley

If Frank Herring easels are what you want, keep checking the Easel Department on the Jackson’s website as we will be stocking them shortly.

“Sturdy, wheels, adjustable height and angle for working, enough room for larger canvases.” –Carole Russell

“I have a Winsor & Newton Thames Radial Easel. I chose it because it holds large canvases and it is easy to move around and store as until now didn’t have a permanent studio space . I’m just setting up in my new studio, I think it still looks the part.” – Sarah Pooley

If this looks and sounds like the easel you need, we have the Winsor & Newton Thames Radial Easel on our website.

“I have a huge studio easel I have had for decades but I now live in a tiny cottage with ceilings too low to raise it to working height. My last studio was too cold to warm up to working temperature. I can’t win.” – Peter Helton

“I have a Tavy easel. You can move the bottom picture-rest up without raising the central pole and punching a hole in your ceiling!” – Emily Morgan

You can view the Winsor & Newton Tavy T-bar Studio easel on our website.

Joanne Kane Pays Rustic Oak Vintage Drafting Table from Studio Designs

Joanne Kane Pays’s Rustic Oak Vintage Drafting Table from Studio Designs

“I have the Rustic Oak Vintage Drafting Table from Studio Designs and I absolutely adore it! The size is good at 42 x 30 inches with Adjustable Angle Table Top from Flat to 90 Degrees and Built-in Pencil Groove with 24″ Pencil Ledge. At 90 degrees, I can paint large canvas’s with acrylics or oils resting on the ledge like you would with an easel, but after I finish those and use pastels, I angle it to 45 degrees which suits me, or flat for watercolours or pencils. I opted for this table as it’s super sturdy, after what is referred to in our house as ‘Easelgate’, where I battled with my old easel for 2 hours as it kept slipping, the canvas eventually hit me on the head, I almost threw the whole lot off the terrace and down the hill. Sense prevailed and instead did some research into what would suit me best, and this drafting table ticked all the boxes for me.

The things that almost put me off, is that a) it’s not height adjustable – but, as I sit in a height adjustable office chair, the problem cancelled itself out. b) it doesn’t have a side table – but my husband is building me a side table with a pullout underneath (like a keyboard slide out on a desk) to put my stuff on while painting. As I work from home, it was more important to me to have something stable that I can use at 90 Degrees to flat, rather than something that could be transported like for plein air (which I never have time for anyway). This drafting table was perfect for me and as a bonus, I can even use it for my sewing machine, it is that sturdy!” – Joanne Kane Pays

If you’d like a Studio Designs drafting table we stock a selection at Jackson’s and we will be adding the Oak Vintage drafting table soon.

“I used to own a draughtboard too. It was so good and may just be the answer!” – Mona George

If you want more information to help you find your perfect easel you can read The Ultimate Easel Guide on our blog.

At Jackson’s, we have a vast range of easels so that you can easily find the right one for you, whether you want to use it in the field, the studio or need one that can be packed down to save room at home. Go to our Easel Department to see the options available.

Suzi Morris, Mama Virus 2016, Oil on aluminium, 61cm x 46cm

Suzi Morris, Mama Virus 2016, Oil on aluminium, 61cm x 46cm

Da Vinci Artists Brushes is delighted to present the inaugural London solo show of Scottish artist Suzi Morris at Herrick Gallery.

Morris explores the synergy that exists between the substance of oil paint and viral behaviour. She works in multiple layers of glaze using high resin oil colour to demonstrate its ability to modify and spread unpredictably.

During her project the Viral Sublime Morris went into laboratories and instigated collaborations with scientists.

‘These partnerships have a profound effect on her imagination and the decisions she makes in painting. The development of her painting and use of paint draws deeply on the imaginative processing resulting from a lifetime of medical treatment in suppressing Keratitis. The scientific and medical language that have become familiar to her in subduing this virus, notably words such as staining, scarring, opacity, blurring, spreading and trace, seep into her practice. The paintings of The Viral Sublime are in part, projections of her imaginary perception of the interior landscape of the body: cerebral images of abstract thoughts on parts of the body that remain unseen to the naked eye. Vertical lines function as ‘biomarkers,’ which reference the measurable indicators in the body and pay homage to the strengths and vulnerabilities of the human spirit.

Morris, co-founder of the da Vinci Artists Residency and former Art Director in Film, recently completed a practice based professional doctorate in Fine Art at UEL, supported by da Vinci Artists Brushes and Schmincke Paint. In 2012 Morris was offered a scholarship to Kingston and later received an MA in Painting from the City & Guilds of London Art School. Her work has been exhibited widely in the UK and Germany, and features as part of collections globally.’

Flora Yukhnovich, Jouissance (2017), Oil on linen, 215 x 180 cm

Yukhnovich in her paintings uses the expression of art historical aesthetic to review contemporary visual culture. In her recent work, she analyses the idea of the feminine through looking at rococo: the rococo as representative of the superficial and frivolous, and femininity as supposedly passive, submissive and decorative.

Liz Douglas: Mire: Pools & Pockets

4 November – 29 November 2017

Liz Douglas, Broomy Gutter, Mixed media on canvas 150cm x 150cm

Liz Douglas, Broomy Gutter, Mixed media on canvas 150cm x 150cm

The work of Liz Douglas is about landscape with an emphasis on particular places. She uses drawing to collect information from a wide variety of sources when researching sites which interest her. She is trying to find a way of incorporating drawing into painting. What is drawing and what is painting – are they the same? This is a constant theme in her work.

Contemporary practices in both drawing and painting, in relation to traditional methods, are a constant challenge in order to find innovative ways of making work that challenges her perception of landscape. She paints often on a large scale, layering paint to create surface texture, colour and structure.

‘Dynamic landscapes constructed out of blocks of colour, textures of paint and numerous gestures, accents and modulations; these are the means by which Heather Duncan expresses a highly personal view of her environment. Places take on a remarkable importance, in particular the rugged northern landscape of vast Pennine moorland, striking fells and crags, monumental castles, and expansive coastlines.’ -Martin Goold

Recent Paintings: Elizabeth Meadows and Helen Douglas-Cooper

Private view: Thursday 23 November 6–9pm
21 November – 26 November 2017

Helen Douglas-Cooper, Blue, 152x152cm, Oil on canvas

Helen Douglas-Cooper, Blue, 152x152cm, Oil on canvas

A joint show of non-figurative work by Elizabeth Meadows and Helen Douglas-Cooper, both of whom explore the possibilities of pictorial space, colour and mark-making as well as the process of layering works, either in practice or by the simultaneity of their making.

Elizabeth Meadows interprets the relationship between one space and the next: the layered acrylic paintings focus on repetition and concentrated forms such as the bar, the curve, the stripe to invoke or resonate a sound which is either muffled or sharp depending on the colour.

Helen Douglas-Cooper explores in her work the space or tension between the actual, physical paint surface of materials and marks and the virtual space of the image. She develops paintings by adding and removing elements in alternating layers of saturated and muted colours until thee image reaches a point when everything holds together in a dynamic balance. An underlying geometry, experimentation with process, and the materiality of the paint surface are recurring themes; colour is an animating force.

Stan’s Lift, Grasshopper Plaza, 2016, Acrylic paint on linen, 80cm x 100cm x 1.5cm

This collaborative exhibition between Blackwood and Dynes, who are both experimental abstract painters living in Deptford, focuses on abstract interruptions that harness conditions of uncertainty in negotiation for space. It uses the possibilities of movement to make it appear contained and writhing within constructed constraints. They create work that appears as suspenseful portals and landscapes that have precarious structures and shifting amorphic forms. They seek to combine and form a two visual languages that interact in the organised chaos of their work. They formly worked under the name Stan’s Lift.

Annie Zamero ShambHala Warrior. Oil and acrylic on canvas, 150 x 100 cm

‘The Magma Group seek to examine to what extent Marshall McLuhan’s well known phrase ‘The Medium is The Message’ applies to fine art. This is explored in their exhibition of paintings and sculpture atArthouse1. McLuhan said ‘Societies have always been shaped more by the nature of…media…than by the content of the communication’. However The Magma Group ‘…whilst not denigrating the role of medium in the ultimate work, credit other aspects with having equal input…in the transmission of its message…’ says art writer/critic Anna McNay. She further points out that the group believes ‘…expressive use of feeling,…’ a well developed idea and ‘…sensitive ..handling of the artist’s medium’ are all necessary to get the artist’s message across.’

Exhibiting Artists includep: Kimbal Quist Bumstead, Siro Carraro, Dagmar Dost-Nolden, Michael Hutchison, Carolina Khouri, Andrew McDonald, Gary William Myatt, Marie-Therese Ross and Annie Zamero.

Eloquent Silence: Stefanie Trow

30 November 2017 – 23 January 2018

Stefanie Trow

Stefanie Trow, Fraction

An exhibition of Stefanie Trow’s paintings.

“Eloquent Silence is a series of work inspired by nature, the human condition and the art of looking. This really came to the forefront of Stefanie’s mind since giving birth to her daughter in 2015 and the subsequent many hours spent walking around parks and being immersed in nature.
During this time Stefanie was able to rethink what was important to her and appreciate her surroundings. It also dawned on her that we rarely look up – but conversely a baby in a pram does little more than stare at the tree canopy, branches and leaves. It is only when she considered this different viewpoint that she realised the potential for new works in the natural shapes, colours and patterns that lay above.

Using these ideas as a vehicle to abstract the figure, Stefanie’s canvases have grown into a bold and colourful amalgamation of outdoor life experiences and time spent in the studio. Both figures and foliage merge and melt into one another, leaving us struggling to separate one from the other.
Stefanie wants the viewer to be intrigued, to draw them closer to the details of the work, discovering the layers of brushstrokes that have been built up to create each piece. At first the paintings appear semi abstract but if we keep looking a new world starts to take shape.”

This is the First UK exhibition of the work of convict artist Thomas Bock. It includes a wide range of drawings, paintings and photographs on various subject matter.

A serious focus of Bock’s work is his series of portraits of the Tasmanian Aboriginal people.

‘His drawing throughout is fine and the likenesses probably very true. The sitters have a demeanour that conveys both pride and despair, suggesting that Bock, being marginalised himself, closely identified with them and sought to convey the tragedies suffered by these indigenous people through the British settlement in Australia.’

This exhibition was organised by the Ikon Gallery and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.

‘Tojimashita (closed)’ by Simon Parish Description: Tokyo’s informal flowerpot gardens are an un-regarded yet ubiquitous site in Japanese cities. What I found interesting in such a contemporary ‘global city’, were how these overlooked sometimes discarded areas were being modified and reclaimed by the local individual. In a city apparently lacking in green space these small unauthorized gardens appear in all sorts of overlooked areas and set up a type of barrier or border between the private and public space, much needed when interior and exterior space are often only separated by a pane of glass. The plants themselves have been influenced by the popular TV programs shown in Japan about English gardens and gardening. The drawings, adapt a dry technical drawing style for the buildings which echo the grid structures of much of Tokyo’s urban planning and try to contrast this with a more careful and tender approach to the plants themselves, I allow the plants to ‘grow’ in size and heighten certain plant colours to contrast them against the rather beautiful white/grey monochrome tone of the city. Medium: Letraset Promarkers and Sharpie Permanant Markers, 71x72cms

‘Cathedral Lane’ by Alice Hole Description: This is a view of an old and atmospheric lane in Truro, Cornwall. I wanted to capture the historic and almost mysterious ambience of the scene. I could feel the echoes of the people who had lived, worked and travelled along here throughout the years. I want people to feel like they can ‘walk’ into the drawing and imagine what is happening just around the corner and feel a part of the stories themselves… This drawing (49 x 59.5cm) was produced using black fine line pens and marker pens in shades of grey. I found that drawing purely tonally helped to convey the atmosphere that I felt. Medium: Copic Markers

'90 Today' by Emma Colbert Artist Description: I went to meet and photograph this lady on her 90th birthday. She was so lady like in her mannerisms but felt very unconfortable sitting in a chair. Her natural place seemed to be perched on the edge of the chair ready to be busy at any moment. I used my photographs from that meeting to produce this image. Drawing up a rough sketch first I fine tune this until I can transfer it to my velour pastel paper. Then I use the soft pastels to block in and later some pastel pencil for fine detail. Although her face told many stories I still wanted it to be flattering to her so I worked hard to keep the palette light and not too heavily contrasted. Medium: Soft Pastel, 16 x 22″

race by Lynn Howarth Artist Description: Pastel head study on Belgian linen panel. It was a bit of an experimental piece as I used a light acrylic underpainting to develop and work out the tonal values before painting the final pastel. Medium: Pastel on Linen Panel
